Xi’an City Wall Photo China

The city is surrounded by a well-preserved city wall which was re-constructed in the 14th century during the early Ming dynasty and was based on the inner imperial palace of Tang dynasty.

The wall was constructed in 1370 and remains intact to this day. The wall measures 11.9km in circumference, 12m in height, and 15 to 18m in thickness at the base; a moat was also built outside the walls. The new wall and moat would protect a much smaller city of 12km².
